I feel that I should eat my share of crow right now
By Ric Webb
Well Well, look what happened at the Region 2 Sr. American Legion baseball tournament. After taking a few pot shots at the new Schuylkill/Berks American Legion League, Kutztown, the league champions, not only compete well in the tournament, they make it all the wat to the championship game. Meanwhile, the two Berks County entries, Twin Valley and West Lawn, were eliminated sometime well before that point.
Although this is just one season’s results, I feel that I should eat my share of crow right now. At some point in my editorial last month I doubted that the Schuylkill Valley/Berks League entry into the Region 2 tournament would probably be erased from the tournament in two straight games.

Cougars come up short in arms race
Chuck Ciganick Jr. knew it was going to be difficult to find enough pitching to make it through one game Wednesday. Surviving two games with a worn down pitching staff would have required the Kutztown coach to pull a rabbit out of his sweat-soaked hat.
Though the Cougars staged yet another wild comeback to beat Pennridge in the first game, Kutztown had no magic remaining for the back end of the doubleheader. Pennridge outhit and outlasted the Cougars to win 13-6 in the Region 2 Legion championship game and earn a spot in next week’s state tournament.

Big inning key for Kutztown
One loss wasn’t going to push the Kutztown Cougars off their postseason warpath. A day after dropping its first playoff game, Kutztown came back strong in an elimination game to beat Nazareth 10-5 at Owls Field and advance to the final day of the Region 2 tournament.

No drama, no win for Cougars
The white-knuckle tension and ninth-inning drama that have been so much a part of Kutztown’s run in the Region 2 Tournament took a night off.
Pennridge made sure there would be no such excitement in the winners bracket final, taking control and holding back the explosive Cougars’ offense to hand Kutztown an 11-6 loss Monday night at Owls Field.

Cougars beat Owls
Call it a statement game, an interleague memo or the shot heard ’round Berks County. Either way, the Kutztown Cougars will call it a win. In the first meeting between a Berks Legion League team and one of the teams that left to join the Schuylkill-Berks League, Kutztown beat West Lawn 15-14 in the Region 2 Tournament Sunday night at Owls Field on Zach Weil’s two-run moonshot to left field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
